Karl Gumpl has been with Amphora Wine Group since 2010 as an Assistant Winemaker and has recently stepped into the position of Head Winemaker.

Having completed “The World Renowned” Winemaking Degree at Adelaide University, South Australia, achieving the Bachelor of Oenology in 2007, Karl has since been working both domestically and internationally in a variety of positions in different sectors of the wine industry. He has worked four vintages in McLaren Vale, South Australia and two in Canada’s Okanagan Valley.

 Working firstly as a cellar hand and then returning to these wineries as a shift supervisor. Karl has gained knowledge from working with many different winemakers and has experienced grape varieties in both cool and warm climates on both boutique and commercial scales. He has helped produce red and white table wines as well as gaining hands on experience in producing sparkling wines and even ice wines.

With a passion for innovation, he has used the most modern techniques in New World wine production while still respecting the mystique and timeless complexity created by Old World winemaking practices.

 Spending time working with Australia’s largest wine retailer,  Dan Murphy’s, has also given him experience in the retail sales sector of the wine industry.

Since joining Amphora in early 2010, Karl has worked very closely alongside former Head Winemaker, Michael Sawyer, learning the business structure and helping to produce high quality wines. In doing so, he has gained extensive experience with the demanding process of exporting shipments of Australian wine to the world, especially into the growing Chinese market. As Amphora has a focus on exporting, Karl has learnt the importance of providing wines that suit the palates of our destination markets.

Amphora Wines has offices and warehousing located at the Historic Stonyfell Winery Complex, Stonyfell Road, Stonyfell South Australia - approximately 10 minutes east of the Adelaide CBD.
